Unencrypted Satellite Data: A Hidden Security Threat

by | Oct 16, 2025

A recent study has uncovered a major cybersecurity vulnerability in satellite communications over North America. Researchers from the University of California, San Diego, and the University of Maryland found that nearly 50% of geostationary satellite (GEO) data links they analyzed were unencrypted. This includes sensitive data from mobile carriers, government agencies, and even the military.

Using consumer-grade satellite dishes costing under $1,000, the team intercepted cleartext communications, including phone calls, texts, internet traffic, military asset tracking, and utility control data. They detected data leaks from companies like T-Mobile and AT&T, as well as Mexican military and government entities.

The risk is severe: unencrypted satellite signals can be intercepted by adversaries, exposing private or critical infrastructure data to foreign intelligence agencies or cybercriminals. While some providers, like SpaceX’s Starlink, use strong encryption standards (ISO/IEC 27001), others lag behind.

Although several carriers have now patched the issue, not all have responded, leaving critical communications potentially exposed. This incident serves as a stark reminder that encryption is not optional—it’s essential. As more infrastructure relies on satellite communications, security must evolve to keep up, or the sky itself may become a surveillance vulnerability.
